Unicef stands for United Nations Children's Fund. The organization called United Nations (UN) was founded by 51 countries after World War II in 1945 to maintain international peace and security. In December 1946 the United Nations General Assembly unanimously established an International Children's Emergency Fund. The fund had a semi-autonomous status in the United Nations, having its own governing body and secretariat. Its main objective was to plan and publish urgent relief programs aimed at helping children and adolescents affected by war in Europe. In 1948 aid was also aimed at helping mothers and children in Asia and Palestine. Within a couple of years the Children's Emergency Fund has become an important organization abroad too. In the 1950s approximately six million children received daily food rations through the CEF. In 1953 the name of the Fund was changed to the United Nations Children's Fund, also known as UNICEF. (Unicef 2013a). From relief programs to sustainable development In the early 1950s, the CEF board of directors decided to broaden the horizon on the well-being of mothers and children from a global perspective. Some believed that the emergency work had been done in post-war Europe. The first programs on health promotion and disease prevention have begun. The first relief and education programs began in sub-Saharan Africa in 1952, just six years after the first initiatives in Europe. In 1956, UNICEF launched the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, which is its best-known programme. The Declaration emphasizes the child's right to protection, education, healthcare, housing and good nutrition. Unicef received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1965 as an organization for promoting brotherhood among nations. International Women's Year, 1975, brought women and g...... to the center of the paper......obs. Career opportunities are varied but also challenging. Concrete relief work usually acquires healthcare professions, etc. nurse or doctor. Vacancies can be short or long term and salary is paid (unlike some humanitarian organizations which work on a volunteer basis). I feel that the vacancies are subject to competition because it is not voluntary work but paid work. Unicef also has a good image and seems to be an interesting organization to work with. My opportunities to work in Unicef are probably slim, because I do not have any international work experience nor do I speak any foreign languages other than Swedish and English. I also have no emergency nursing experience. My experience in health promotion and nursing management would probably benefit me. Overall I believe that Unicef hires solid and flexible professionals with diamond experience and multiple skills.
