In the photo showing a smiling family in matching outfits, my father had a smile on his face. It was a slightly embarrassing smile. His eyes were a little cross-eyed, yet he was still smiling. He hadn't yet found a way to tell us that he was having trouble at his new job in Pennsylvania, yet he was still smiling. That day we were all hiding something behind our smiles. My father hid his work problems behind his own. My brother had an angrier and more irritated smile because just before the photographer took the photo, he and my father got into a little argument. My mother's smile hid her disappointment because she had just scolded my brother for wearing white socks that didn't match his shirt, she knew this portrait wouldn't be perfect. On my sister's face you can see a sense of unease because just before the photo, she had fallen in the photo that day. For me, I also had a sense of irritation behind the smile on my face. I heard this because about 5 seconds before the photographer pressed the camera button, my family was arguing. Every time I look at the picture in my house, I see how fake it is. How fake we are to "look natural", how fake our smiles are, how fake we are like a happy family
