Houston was asked what could change in today's version of policing. He said the police have been on an increasing path of militarization in recent years. Not only that, but it has broadened their scope of expertise. Instead of simply protecting individuals from crime and serving the people, police officers now perform parent-like duties, such as enforcing truancy laws and providing counseling. During his reign as an officer, Houston said he has noticed this transition over the years. Not only that, but the increased firepower that every police department now has. Instead of the rifle or long rifle as a heavy weapon, they now use automatic rifles like the AR-15 and M-16. The entire arsenal of police departments has been filled with military-grade hardware such as stun grenades, riot gear, sniper rifles, tear gas and more. Tear gas is banned in war by several international treaties. However, it is not banned for domestic use such as riot control in the United States. According to the Fraternal Order of Police, military equipment protects officers from civilians.
