In my research, I explored the world of eating disorders. I wanted to see if there was something specifically encouraging eating disorders and if there was a way to stop them. Eating disorders greatly affect the community because they often go unchecked or unrecognized. As a recovered anorexic, I feel it is very important to address this issue. It's a very big problem that is often not addressed at all, or is seen as normal, like counting calories. I was hoping to find a way to improve the way eating disorders are viewed and explain to people what defines an eating disorder, because many people will never know unless it is explicitly explained to them. The purpose of my practice is to bring light into the dark world of eating disorders and find a way to help those who need it most. It has become too common a problem to go unaddressed and it is imperative to stop it. I initially wanted to do a study on self-destructive behavior and whether or not it was the result of society. I found many limitations, one of which was that the definition of self-destructive is not defined. There are many different meanings and ways to be self-destructive. That said, I couldn't accurately gauge whether or not it was the result of the company or not. I had to abandon that topic completely. I chose the topic of eating disorders because I became fascinated with the Internet, the "thigh gap" trend, role models, and social representation of what is beautiful. Having overcome this phenomenon, I am very concerned for the people who suffer in silence. Eating disorders are very common in American society. Many studies have been conducted on the topic of eating disorders, but few have focused on adolescent boys. He calls himself a teenager... middle of the paper... boy, that's a little disappointing. I still found a lot of enlightening information through my research for this project, and the process made me want to research it further. In the future, someone (not necessarily myself) will have to do research on males with eating disorders. I feel like they have different personality traits than women who suffer from this form of self-destruction, even though my research would tell me otherwise. I think maybe they are shown in different ways than women show them, because guys are socially trained to hide their emotions. It would be interesting to see the comparison. This project helped me open my eyes to the patriarchal society that my children will one day have to deal with. This is my motivation to try to change it, many aspects but not just the encouragement to starve.
