It was early April when the Rwanda disaster occurred. When the president of Rwanda, Juvènal Habyarimana, was assassinated. After the president was assassinated, the fighting and killings began. One guy who won the Pulitzer Prize twice said the most vivid thing about his assignment was hearing all the screaming. The Hutu militia was killing everyone and everything that crossed their path. The stench of dead bodies was everywhere and filled the air wherever I went and because of the smell everyone was getting sick and vomiting everywhere. People made crosses out of twigs and set fire to the twigs because it was cold and they needed a way to keep warm. They had estimated that around 500,000 people would be killed that day in April. The country's population and industrial infrastructure were destroyed and relocated. Gross domestic product has been reduced. Humanitarian organizations working in the region say Rwandan children are the most vulnerable to the poverty that then follows the ethnic group.
