Topic > Essay on Ozone Depletion - 651

The depletion of the ozone layer has been a trending topic since its discovery in 1970. The ozone layer is a portion of the Earth's stratosphere that absorbs most of the UV rays of the sun, thus preventing cancer and other deadly skin diseases. It contains high concentrations of O3 and is broken down at a constant rate. Since 1970, it has been found that approximately 4% of the ozone layer is depleted every decade and is the result of daily human activity. From the daily use of CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) and other decreasing substances, ozone is being consumed more and more. These substances are called ozone depleting substances (ODS). They are usually found in chemicals, and because they cause depletion of the ozone layer, they also cause skin cancer and disorders in humans and animals. CFCs are used as chillers in refrigerators and air conditioners. They were used in car air conditioners until 1995, when it was discovered that CFSs were depleting ozone. Industrially they are found in solvents and sometimes in dry cleaners. Additionally, detergents, foam insulation and packaging materials are also known to contribute to ozone depletion. The earth cannot support life without ozone, which embodies the exact opposite of a banal situation. There are three forms of oxygen in the ozone cycle: atomic oxygen, O, molecular oxygen, O2 (oxygen gas), and triatomic oxygen, O3. Photodissociation of the oxygen molecule converts molecular oxygen into two atomic oxygen radicals, which then combine with more O2 molecules to form O3 molecules. These O3 molecules absorb UV rays thus preventing the risk of cancer... middle of paper... measures also help eradicate illegal producers of substances that deplete the ozone layer. The topic of ozone depletion has been trending raising heated debates and conservation across the world. Human activity has been the main cause of depletion and therefore it can be eradicated through human activities in order to conserve it to sustain life. The use of CFCs, otherwise known as ozone depleting substances, has caused stains/holes in the ozone layer, which protects life from direct ultraviolet rays. Exposure to these rays makes humans susceptible to cancer and other deadly diseases, and soon the earth will no longer be able to support life. To curb or completely eradicate this problem, countries have come together to raise awareness, provide funds and support movements to eliminate ozone depleting substances to make life on earth sustainable and for future generations to come..
