''Conflict is the process of opposition and confrontation that occurs in organizations between individuals or groups: it occurs when parties exercise power in pursuit of valued goals or objectives and impede progress from elsewhere '' (Wagner and Hollenbeck 2010, p.227). Oceanic Bank International Plc (OBI) is one of Nigeria's leading financial services institutions. The bank serves customers across all sectors: governments, corporate organizations, small and medium-sized businesses and individuals. This review focuses on issues relating conflict between marketing and operational functions and performance on OBI. A classic example of organizational conflicts is seen in the relationship between marketing or sales and operations or production (Rotemberg and Saloner,1995) and was noted by Shapiro (1977) as being caused primarily by a difference in evaluation criteria for different units. Taking OBI, Nigeria as a case study, marketing staff are evaluated based on the number of business they generate while operations staff are based on how effectively and efficiently they carry out their duties while adhering to the bank's policies. Other causes of conflict, as highlighted by (Mullins 2005), can be linked to differences in perception, individual attitudes, departmentalization and specialization. This can result in different responses in individuals and different goals. In this analysis, the effects of conflict in reducing motivation and performance are discussed. The advantages of functional conflict over dysfunctional conflict in OBI are analyzed. The importance of communication and resolution approaches is explored. Suggestions are also made on how to minimize conflicts in the bank... halfway through the paper... and the effects on individuals, the group and the organization are important to appreciate the factors that increase and hinder group conflicts and creates ways to address dysfunctional behaviors and circumstances that lead to conflicts and builds ways to encourage functional conflicts that drive performance and good business behavior at OBI. The use of a collaborative approach in conflict management should be encouraged as this will improve teamwork in the bank. The importance The importance of effective coordination and communication which can develop a team culture and trust in the bank was highlighted. The suggestions given in the report, when implemented, would be beneficial to the bank. It would minimize or eliminate the intensity of conflict and improve the performance of staff and the organization as a whole.
