Topic > The effects of violent video games on aggression...

Society has evolved dramatically over the last 50 years due to new and continually developing technology. Video games, developed in the late 1980s and early 1990s, are a product of new, life-changing technology. Video games, or to be more specific violent video games, have been most popular among children and young adults. Parents tend not to see the consequences that evolve around violent video games; especially children who play more than ten hours a week at these games. Only recently has video game technology advanced and become more engaging using realistic simulations of violence, triggering aggressive behavior in young adults and may actually desensitize them to violence. However, some may believe that violent video games do not contribute to any of these factors; Research shows that violent games have a profound effect on aggressive behavior in children and young adults along with factors related to parenting style, lifestyle and brain development stages. I'm not surprised to find that most kids these days are problem solving their conflicts through aggression. For example, I have a 16-year-old brother who plays violent video games daily. Unfortunately he shows a great deal of aggression and anger towards his younger sisters. He constantly uses explicit language, hurting his younger sisters; throwing books at them and always making inappropriate sexual comments towards others. When my parents try to solve these problems and take away his video games, my brother gets very angry and hits anything or anyone in his way. My parents try to take action but it never works because of the more problems my brother can cause. In the article, violent video games are present... in the center of the paper... in violent films and books and violence in their own writings. The report found no relationship between playing violent video games and school shootings. Also according to Dr. Christopher Ferguson, chair of the psychology and communications department at Texas A&M International University in Laredo, states that he "has found no link between playing violent video games and the likelihood of violent behavior and desensitivity" (CBSnews) . After these school or public shootings have taken place, Ferguson finds it interesting how eager certain segments of society are to cling to this narrative of violence in video games; that in a time of moral panic…. It gives [society] a sense of control over things they can't control. Public opinion would like these violent games to be the main cause of aggression and violence among children and young adults, but this is not the case.
