Long, long ago, God decided to punish evil people, but before he did, he ordered Noah to build an ark and fill it with two of every animal he could find together with his family. Animals and humans. The book I would like to use in this essay is “Crossing”, by Gary Paulsen. This book is set in Juarez, Mexico, where a bridge could mean a lot. Each character in this book has been compared to an animal, to make us understand each of them better. Each of them is also different. From the shape of their eyes, the way they react to something, and that's what makes each of them different and special. Paulson compares animals and humans based on their similar characteristics and behaviors. Palson used many comparisons between animals and characters throughout the book, but I would only use three in this essay. The first comparison occurred on page seventy-eight of Crossing. An example of an animal comparison was cited between the main character Manny: “…oh yeah, it was the monkey. There was a monkey on a chain tied to a wire between two trees. I think there are two reasons why Gary Paulsen compared the monkey, this particular animal, to Many, this particular character. The first reason is pretty obvious, between Manny and the monkey. Apes are believed to be humans with lower IQ, another form of human who shared many similarities and similarities in several areas with humans. The second reason is their situation, both without freedom. What is freedom? No one can define the word “freedom”. But the fundamental definition of freedom is when you are free from fear, bondage and hurt. Do the monkey and Manny have them? No, they have nothing on them. Manny, it's everything...at the center of the card...even his unique personality, identity and destiny. They are like us, but they live in books. For me, we can know how to read their stories and use what we read to connect them to what we already knew. Manny, the main character of “Crossing,” was compared to a monkey tied with chains, which resembled the loss of freedom for both of them. Manny compared the group of people who want to capture and sell him to hawks to make the point that he can't fight off the hawks. Either he runs away or he gets caught, he has no choice. He also compared how the people in example three were street dogs, because they fought. Throughout our work throughout history, we have maintained a very close relationship with animals. This is what Gary Paulsen, the author of "Crossing", tried to do in "Crossing", to compare the character he created to animals..
