Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are allotropes of carbon with a cylindrical nanostructure. Their radius is generally of the order of a few nanometers. It is a hollow structure with walls formed by carbon sheets one atom thick, called grapheme, and therefore belonging to the structural family of fullerenes formed by a single structural component. The difference between types of CNTs is formed based on the specific angle at which the graphene sheet is rolled. There are therefore three types of nanotubes based on the rolling angle:-1. Armchair2. Zigzag3. ChiralBased on the number of CNTs enclosed:-1. Single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs)2. Multi-walled nanotubes (MWNTs) Properties Individual nanotubes naturally align into "strings" held together by van der Waals forces called pi-stacking. However, they are very stiff with tensile strengths between 13 and 60 Gpa, cannot withstand compressive stress, and break easily when force is applied in the radial direction.
