Many of us today have access to the Internet and social networking sites. They have become essential in everyday life. However, there has been a lot of controversy surrounding teenagers' access to social networking sites. Imagine your daughter or son is bullied on Facebook or Myspace to the point of attempting or succeeding in committing suicide due to the social destruction. People are not aware of the pros and cons of social networks. Do the negative aspects outweigh the positive aspects of social networks? Should Teens Be Banned From Social Networking Sites?Social Networking OverviewMost teens are aware of basic social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Myspace, but do they know what social networking means? Social networks allow adolescents to create a public or private profile that allows them to chat with their friends via email, posting comments, photos, and expressing personal hobbies (Griffith, 2009). Many people who participate in social networking sites believe that these sites are beneficial to “our society”. However, many other people disagree and consider these sites more of a threat than something beneficial to our children and adolescents (“Social,” n.d.). Individuals and teenagers say that social networks are a great place to communicate about their education or personal interests. While parents argue that networking is dangerous because it is unsafe, it is a major source of mutual bullying, online sexual predators try to prey on young people, and teenagers become disconnected from the real world (Carey, n.d.). A short study for 200 students at the University of Maryland was to have them give up social networking for a day to see how they would behave... middle of paper ......old male. Supposedly, she met him through one of her friend's brothers. Covert immediately took action and took away all of his daughter's electronic devices and is only allowed to use them when he is in sight (personal communication, October 17, 2010). This personal interview definitely made me aware, as an individual, that social networks are dangerous for young teenagers. Conclusion The dispute between the pros and cons of social networks has become clear. The negatives outweigh the positives for teens participating in social networks. Many people can argue that it is essential for communication and education. However, when someone ends their life due to bullying, it becomes a tragedy and this leads us to believe that teenagers should be banned from social networking sites until they are responsible and mature enough to handle the real world..
