Topic > Play: Educating Rita, by Willy Russell - 1308

Education offers unique experiences for everyone. These experiences do not depend on the individual's personal background or social status. According to Jane Thompson, an educational scholar, the educational process can be a restriction on creativity or a “practice of freedom”. In Educating Rita by Willy Russell, the protagonist's experience through the Open University is one of freedom as she is provided with the opportunity to express her thoughts and discover her limits. There is an internal struggle within Rita as the new environment threatens to erase her past life. Rita is able to maintain her freedom practice with the help of Frank, who provides her with a welcoming and encouraging learning environment. At the beginning of the show, Rita is introduced as a talkative woman who is very capable of expressing her thoughts in a simple fashion. From Rita's informal dialect and her lack of discipline, it is clear that she has received limited education prior to this encounter. In contrast, Frank is a “bona fide teacher” who is an expert in his field of study. (4) Ironically, Frank is very dissatisfied with his occupation, and the same careless attitude can be found in Rita's personality. (16) Their relationship immediately blossoms because of this similarity, creating a welcoming environment for Rita. The office becomes Rita's sanctuary as she slowly reveals her lack of confidence. Rita expresses her disbelief when she received the acceptance notification. In Rita's mind, the Open University must be an inferior college and there must be a lack of enrollment this year. (4) For Rita, if it had been another tutor, she would have “packed her bags” and left. (9) Frank is reason...... center of the card ......d the freedom to please oneself rather than others. All this is achieved thanks to the joint effort of Rita and Frank. According to scholar Jane Thompson, the “practice of freedom” allows an individual to discover his or her own path in this world. This is certainly the case for Rita as she navigates the Open University and establishes her own hidden potentials. With Frank's help, Rita manages to overcome the struggles that faced her during her studies, and emerges victorious. Without Frank's help, Rita would not have been enrolled at the Open University and her life would not have made this dramatic change for the better. The end product of their combined hard work becomes a new Rita, an educated woman who is confident, independent and of free will. It wasn't easy for her, but for Rita the efforts were definitely worth it.
