Topic > Treatment of Women in The Odyssey and Now - 1072

Throughout history, society has stereotyped women, making it simply impossible for a woman to achieve her goals and desires in life. This did not consider them equal and because of this they were given different standards to live by. Nowadays, and during ancient Greece, women have always been treated as second best by prejudiced men, although today's society has begun to better understand this inequality as time advances into the future. Even though society is becoming more equal for women, women are still treated similarly as in the time of the ancient Greeks. Women still do not have as much power as men, they are still “blamed” for wrong actions and considered untrustworthy, and they are still used as “currency” or are exploited. All over the world, women are starting to gain more political power and can have other jobs and rights, but this has only been achieved recently, as women have always been second best. For starters, women were technically considered “slaves” or just above the standards of a slave. A woman's main purpose was to cook, clean, raise a family, and have sex, or sometimes be raped, to satisfy a man's needs. In Greece, they were seen as a man's object or property, and did not have full rights, and in America, women were simply given “all” rights not even fifty years ago. Furthermore, for women in power today or for those who would like to be, it is still difficult for people to vote for them, since people think that it is different from the norm to vote for a woman rather than a man. During the 2008 presidential election, Hillary Clinton ran against Barack Obama for the Democratic Party nomination, and it seemed the country was more ready for the possibility of a bla... middle of paper... this unspeakable thing, acting as if they were gods and knowing that they could get away with anything. Men saw women as slaves or property, and once they got one, they owned her in their eyes. Women's act of using their bodies as currency has not changed, nor has men's idea of considering them just property. As modern society began to create complete equality between gender and race, women were still seen as second best, below their peers. Man. Because today's women, like women in ancient times, still do not have as much power as men, they are accused of wrong and untrustworthy actions, and their bodies are used as currency by men or are exploited. Hopefully as the future progresses these problems will be resolved and will not continue for generations to come. Works Cited Homer, Robert Fagles (Translator), The Odyssey. Edge of the bridge, 1997
