Civil liberties and civil rights are some of the most controversial issues in society and government today. Debates about these freedoms and rights are crucial. Topics such as the violation of these rights by the government, through laws and the like, and even the violation of society, through people's feelings of equality, seem to take center stage whenever they are discussed. This controversy stems from the Constitution's Bill of Rights and its ambiguity about the Fourteenth Amendment and how it should apply and grow with society. In my opinion, I believe that civil liberties and civil rights are crucial to our country as a whole, but addressing them here, in their entirety, would be impossible and overall pointless. However, if I were in government and amending or interpreting the Constitution, also keeping in mind the changes I would like to make to the Constitution from my latest essay, I would identify freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and the pursuit of happiness as one of the freedoms civil rights and the most fundamental civil rights mentioned, and I would like to reiterate or add it to my constitution. To open this discussion, I would like to start with civil freedom of religion. This freedom was identified in my original essay on the Constitution through the mention of the separation clause of church and state. The reason I included this freedom, and underlined its importance, is that I believe the government interprets this freedom unilaterally due to the misinterpretation of the separation of church and state clause already in place. I also include it because I believe that attacks on religion have metastasized in recent times and that...... middle of paper...... should be limited only by the choices that the individual makes and the opportunities that said individual may or may not benefit, not from the choices and opportunities that others may or may not make for him. Regarding these aspects of equality and self-reliance, I am convinced that only the government is powerful enough to guarantee or attempt to guarantee this pursuit. Finally, I covered the two main ideas I wanted to add to my essay on the Constitution, along with a civil liberty I had already talked about. I explained my reasoning for why I had established civil liberty of religious protection in my original article, along with the reasons why I wanted to add those of free speech and the pursuit of happiness. All of this combined forms a more complete picture of what I want this country to be and how I want this country to operate.
