There are many reasons for the fall of Rome, but these reasons are intertwined with two main categories: economics and war. The Roman economy became so bad that they had to tax citizens and raise prices. Roman citizens who worked could not leave their jobs for fear of ending up in prison only to be released from death (doc 3.). The Romans feared for their lives and tried to raise a family with the little money they had left after being taxed. This shows that the Roman government is unscrupulous and cares so little about its working citizens. You saw them as dollar signs rather than people with families. Another example of this in document 2, Rome was hard on its citizens because of money, when the citizens could not live on the little money left on their salary neck they decided to leave Rome (Doc 2). As Rome increased its expenses, prices increased (doc 6). The Romans ended up moving because of this poor treatment. The rich owned slaves who forcibly performed free labor. In the end the workers were left without work and moved elsewhere (doc 11). If slaves did all the work, citizens faced punishment for not having money to tax. Huge numbers of lives lost due to disease resulting in economic decline (Doc 5.). Due to illness and death the worker population continued to decline, the only way Rome would survive the loss was to increase wages. The poor suffer from taxes while the rich “are not punished for their injustice” (doc 17). The injustice of the rich is that they can sit back and watch the working class struggle to survive and live in fear; while the slaves do their work for them. Rome refused to change and believed its ways could be saved (doc 10). With Rome trying to save its ways rather than change them, it made the citizens suffer and caused the fall of Rome. The economy harmed the people of Rome which destroyed the empire. The Roman army was strong but weakened and lost power; the loss of armed forces meant the destruction of the Roman Empire (doc 8). The army became a joke due to laziness and lack of soldiers, they lost more and more wars. Rome has started to decay because of this and no one can live in a place where everything is falling apart, it's just not safe.
