The meaning of this work, as well as its controversies, seems to reflect Wagner's complex personality, and therefore it is worth studying even more than a century after the composer's death. Creation of Parsifal The creation of Parsifal, Wagner's last and most dramatic opera, took 25 years. years from 1857 to 1882, embracing the last third of the composer's life, and thus absorbing his most mature and thoughtful ideas. Inspired by Wolfram von Eschenbach's poem Parzival, Wagner at the same time harshly criticizes the 13th-century author, calling him a poet of a "barbarous and confused period" who "understands absolutely nothing of the true content" (Beckett 3). Wolfram's poetry included mostly simple characters, while focusing more on plot and symmetry of events.
