The traditional setting of prom is a dance attended by a pair of young teenagers: a male and female couple. But what if an individual wanted to have a same-sex prom girl? Fighting a battle of rejection or acceptance by the family or school board to approve that a lover or causal date for prom should not be determined by the same sex. Whether it concerns gay students, friends with gay parents, or gay clubs in public schools has been a controversial issue for many years. Two teenagers, Constance McMillen and Derrick Martin, are facing this battle as they try to take their date to prom. Constance McMillen, the Mississippi student who attended Itawamba County Agricultural High School, had her prom canceled because she wanted to accompany her sophomore sweetheart. at the prom. The school board did not accept the same-sex date and canceled the prom. Not only could he not bring his girlfriend, but she wasn't even allowed to wear a tuxedo. McMillen's appointment was denied because school district policy requires appointments to be of the opposite sex (Associated Press, 2010). After being denied the right to bring the prom date, the court and lawyers got involved. The court found that the school was violating its First Amendment rights. The First Amendment states that Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or restrict freedom of speech or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. These delicate words guaranteed the United States the good development of the people and the protection of rights. The United States Constitution is here to protect the rights of the people, so problems like this ca...... middle of paper ...... Know that there are many local resources (within walking distance of his hometown) able to help Derrick and will be made available. There are offers to help keep him safe (security), as well as for other daily and prom needs. Derrick knows best what he will need and will accept accordingly” (Melloy, 2010). Therefore, despite all the criticism from others who don't agree with the whole situation Martin still has support and is safe. Martin will continue with his life and go to school as an honor student, knowing that he fought for his rights. As a result, justice was aborted against Constance McMillen for violating her first amendment, although some people will still blame her for the prom cancellation. Derrick Martin was kicked out of his home by his parents and lives well with the support of friends from around the world.
