People can dress however they want, but when they are at school there are some restrictions and guidelines so that students are not distracted by what someone else is wearing. The court case is Briana Stephenson v. Davenport. In eighth grade, Briana Stephenson got a tattoo of a cross between her thumb and forefinger. The tattoo had gone unnoticed for three years until Briana was in eighth grade and gang activity was on the rise. A school consular had noticed the tattoo and reported it to the principal thinking it was the symbol of a gang. The school suspended Briana until her tattoo was removed, which was a $500 treatment. Briana's case went to the Supreme Court where the judge ruled in Briana's favor. Another dress code court case is Zachary Guiles v. Seth Marineau. In Williamstown, Vermont seventh-grader Zachary Guiles wore a President George Bush T-shirt. The school forced him to put tape over images disparaging the president.
