1. How can the Latin phrase Esse est percipi be applied to a specific and concrete analysis of Beckett's material? Esse est percipi, or To be is to be seen, is a very profound statement that Beckett seems to use as one of the main themes of his playwriting. Beckett's collection of short works often has no beginning or end and building good examples is something to behold. Beckett uses the senses in his writing. With the use of the sense of sight and the sense of hearing, Beckett constructs the very essence of his characters and thus brings out the idea that to be is to be seen. In Happy Days, Beckett created the character of Winnie who is trapped and buried in a mound of earth. Beckett wrote that Winnie is very focused on seeing. Throughout the show, Winnie constantly does things that emphasize the act of seeing. He puts on and takes off his glasses, reads the tube of toothpaste, reads the handle of the toothbrush and other similar acts. By seeing every object and reading the writing on it, he justifies its existence and by reading and seeing every object it exists. His eyes are used as props, open and closed, demonstrating “that one sees the other, the other sees the one” (28). This statement is a very powerful example of how each person justifies the other by seeing the other. Without one seeing the other, there is no one who sees the one. In this simple statement Winnie proclaims the very act of existence. Winnie makes several other statements about the act of seeing throughout the play when she talks to her husband Willie, as in “You could see me, Willie, do you think, from where you are, if you looked up at me [ …] Lift up your eyes at me” (28). Winnie needs Willie to look at her to verify that she is still there seeing him, and that he sees her. Being stuck in the same routine of her daily life can be a prison. Sharing that day with someone, even just hearing or seeing, gives Winnie a reason to move forward and “be.” Winnie articulates the feeling of disappearing in the blink of an eye by stating, “Strange feeling that someone is watching me.
