In the poems "Gifts from My Aunts in Pakistan", by Monica Alve, and "Vultures" by Chinua Achebe, there is a use of color and powerful images , various techniques and possible connotations to emphasize the particular setting, or the feelings of a particular person, and to also highlight the two sides of each poem. In "Gifts from my aunts in Pakistan". Monica begins the poem vividly, causing vibrant images to immediately form in my head. Through the words "peacock blue" and the simile "shimmering like a split orange" I am figuratively told that she is attracted to the flamboyant traditions of Asian culture, yet she continues by saying "the bracelets broke, they drew blood." This highlights to me that although she grew up with Pakistani traditions, the "snap bracelets" represent the end of that particular culture in her life and how she is reluctant to feel separated from it. Additionally, the use of blood, which can be interpreted as a deep red color, shows that his Pakistani life is coming to an end at a young age. Also, in the poem “Vultures” the opening phrase is “in the greyness.” which tells me that the setting is dark and gloomy at that specific time. This also tells me that the poem might not be the most pleasant, as the color grey, might represent something bland and melancholic. However, reading forward, the words "nestled close to his mate..." create the feeling that this poem might not be so dark after all, proving that there can be love even in dark situations. Reconnecting to the "presents", Monica may feel uncomfortable with the fact that she is part Pakistani, but a part of her will always love him, and she will have to accept it. The powerful uses of imagery in these two poems help in the attempt to do this. ..... middle of the paper ......m is simply expressing this. This highlights how conflicted Monica feels, which helps the reader understand what she is going through. With the use of various techniques in "vultures", such as the metaphors "a stone / on a stem rooted in / a dump of dirt / feathers", personification "despondent dawn" and alliteration "broken bone". Furthermore, in the "gifts" techniques such as alliteration and simile "shimmer like a split orange." Both authors highlight, using imagery, the progression of the conflict in both poems. The reader would experience emotions such as disgust for vultures and sympathy for "presents". Achebe tries to convey the message that someone evil, deep down, might actually be loving, and that love and death always go together. Furthermore, Alvi conveys the message that being caught between two cultures can cause bewilderment and skirmishes..
