On February 12, 2014, thousands of students from several universities took to the streets of Caracas to protest their dissatisfaction with Nicolas Maduro's government. Led by opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez, the students called for improvements in living conditions that have worsened significantly over the past fifteen years. The protests have not ceased since February. Recent events have highlighted possible peace talks between the protesters and the government, however, skepticism reigns in the minds of those who have been disillusioned with the corrupt government. This skepticism is the result of the government exercising the rule of law instead of the rule of law. This inappropriate use of the law has not only created corruption in the government, but has also created great economic hardship in Venezuela.
