Topic > Invasive Plants - 973

As we are accustomed to a life full of modern conveniences, it is important to remember that human survival still depends on the natural diversity of the planet. Pennsylvania has 25,000 species of plants and animals, of which over 2,100 are native (IConserve, 2007). It is critical that we appreciate the sustainable use of these natural resources that impact the economic health of our beautiful state and the quality of life for all Pennsylvanians. Yet there are many threats to the biodiversity of our home. A significant threat is invasive plant species that are eliminating native plant species. Invasive plants are plants that grow aggressively, spreading and displacing other plants (Ball, 2002). Whether intentional or unintentional, they are often introduced by humans. On the other hand, native plants are pants that existed in Pennsylvania before European settlement. Since they are intended to grow here, they are very beneficial to the environment and people (Fell 1995). To preserve the health and natural beauty of Pennsylvania, it is essential to control the growth of invasive plant species while supporting the growth of native plant species. When Pennsylvania was first settled in 1600 by William Penn, abundant plants covered about 90 percent of the land. state (IConserve 2007). All of these plants are considered native because they existed in the area before human settlement. Unfortunately, due to human interactions with nature, the landscape has changed significantly over time. Many plants that once defined Pennsylvania have been lost; however, this problem can be reversed to some extent. By 2000, 5% of Pennsylvania's native plant species had been lost and another 25% were endangered by... middle of paper... which are invasive and control or destroy any invasive species. These plants are adaptable and grow well in a wide range of conditions and therefore have a much better chance of thriving. It is also important to use fertilizers in moderation because high nitrogen often stimulates aggressive plant growth (Fell, 1995). Land management planning is also important. Weekly mowing is important for lawn maintenance and weeding is important for gardens. Pennsylvania's lawns should be mowed annually and woodlands should be monitored for removal of invasive plant species (Ball, 2001). Unfortunately, invasive plants are causing problems not only in Pennsylvania, but across the country (Invasive Plants: Silent Invaders, 2004). It is essential that efforts are made to prevent the plant crisis from worsening further.
