The effectiveness of using songs to teach pronunciation in Libyan secondary school English as a foreign language classroomChapter 11.0 INTRODUCTION In most cases, English teaching is always a controversy. In a sense, the emphasis is on accuracy (rules) rather than fluency (fluency of speech) and vice versa. However, to have full command of the language, it is necessary to be competent in both areas (Watkins, 2005, p. 83,84), although this is not an easy task. This means that communication is as important as grammar. One of the most important aspects of the language is pronunciation. However, teaching pronunciation is a crucial factor to consider even if it is difficult. Different methods are used to teach pronunciation. One of these methods is songs. Regarding intelligibility, pronunciation is important. Some areas that need to be considered are sounds, stress, vowel length, and intonation. A slight difference in these areas can change the speaker's intended meaning. According to Kelly (2000, p11), a speaker who "consistently mispronounces a series of phonemes" can hardly be understood by his listener. For example, /ˈðei/ as in them and /dei/ as in a day are easily mispronounced especially by L2 learners, which leads to a distortion of meaning. In addition to this, the speaker's mispronunciation can inhibit successful communication (Ebong, Sabbadini, 2006; Kelly, 2000). Therefore, incorrect pronunciation can force communication leading to frustration of the speaker and listener. As a result, the speaker refuses to repeat the message too many times, and the listener may feel intimidated for not being able to process what is being said. Perhaps this is why second language (henceforth… middle of the paper… function (Harvey, 2004). Meanwhile, Fraser (1994, p.104) defined “effectiveness” as a measure of the correspondence between the declared objectives and their achievement. It is always possible to achieve “easy” and low-level objectives, in other words, quality in higher education cannot be just a question of “results” achieved, but must also imply judgments about goals. (part of 'inputl')Songs: As defined by the free dictionary.com, songs are a piece of music composed with words for the voice, songs can also be interpreted as a short composition,. written or adapted for singing. Pronunciation: Kelly defined this term as speech sounds that can occur in isolation or as part of a solitary stream of sounds. Kelly also added that listeners can detect patterns in the way the sounds are organized and also the meanings they carry (2000, p. 49(
