I would like to begin by extending my appreciation to the members of the United Nations. We meet today to dedicate our time to the meaning of Angkor Wat. In my opinion, Angkor Wat is of significant archaeological importance as it provides direct insight into the human creative genius, architecture and testimony of a cultural tradition of the Angkor Wat civilization and must be preserved for future generations. Basic Information Angkor Wat is located in the city of Angkor in northwestern Cambodia. The construction of Angkor Wat began in 1125. The Khmer Empire civilization was responsible for its construction. Angkor Wat was in use for 270 years from 1162 to 1431. The Khmer civilization was largely formed by Indian cultural influences. The Khmer empire showed a steady development from relative naturalism to a more conventionalized technique. The Khmer were great masters of stone sculpture. Khmer society was guided by an extensive judicial system with religious and secular nobles, artisans, fishermen and rice farmers, soldiers and elephant keepers. Khmer society was a cosmopolitan blend of Pali and Sanskrit rituals resulting from a fusion of Hindu and Buddhist belief systems.
