Topic > Fate or free will in William Shakespeare's Othello

Are the characters governed by fate or free will? Destiny means a power that some people believe causes and controls all events, so that you cannot change or control how things will happen. Free will means the ability to decide what to do independently of any external influence. The difference between the two justifies causes that are in someone else's hands or in your own hands. The reason I chose the basic information that supports my approach is because life can be affected by the outcome of what you do, regardless of what is in favor. The characters and events in the play were influenced by fate because the path and actions they recently chose reflect what will happen later in the play. The beginning of the play begins when Iago and Roderigo were discussing their plan that Iago wants to be second. in command and Roderigo wants to make love with Desdemona. Subsequently, they entered into a dispute with Desdemona's father regarding Othello's marriage to Desdemona. When Othello married Desdemona, Iago's first plan was to make Cassio lose his job by getting drunk and fighting. Desdemona later tries to convince Othello to give Cassio's job back. So, Iago keeps Desdemona, Othello, Cassio and Bianca stuck in a situation of who is betraying what, the handkerchief and Cassio's job. Later, Iago found himself in trouble with evidence that revealed everything that really happened in the play. Finally Othello kills himself, Iago is imprisoned under torture, Emilia dies later and Cassio becomes governor of Cyprus. The first meaning of free will in the work is the ability to act at one's own discretion. Duke: “If goodness is beautiful; your son-in-law is handsome, not black. The reason I choose the quote is because Duke has… middle of the paper… choices in his favor. The examples show that Iago took free will and used it as an advantage to carry out his plans. In the entire essay, the characters were mostly influenced by fate because Iago took advantage of the characters' freedom to make choices. He made his plans and knew what to do and the right way to carry them out. The term destiny is related to the play where Iago was regarded as the external force that decided what he had planned in advance so he could simply make the characters do what he set, so there is no control of the situation with that the other characters have to deal with. . However, Emilia had an advantage as she rather knew what happened regarding the handkerchief and Desdemona did not cheat to reveal the truth of what happened in the play. The reason why actions support fate is because everything the characters did determined the outcome of the play.
