Student publications are not the only things that are censored in school. The way a student chooses to express themselves through clothing is also censored. The school has the right to control the school environment, even if that means censoring the way a student dresses. Schools can also impose a dress code as long as it is reasonable and the school has made it a specific rule. (Actually 9). A Del Norte High School student was suspended for wearing saggy pants. The reason for this suspension given by the school was due to a “growing gang problem.” The student named Richard Bivens was warned several times not to wear the saggy pants and defied the school by wearing them after the warnings. The school decided to give him a full term suspension. Richard's mother filed a lawsuit against the school. Richard claimed that he was just trying to fit in with the black culture at his school. The court ruled against Richard, pointing out that the school had the right to impose a dress code if it wanted to decrease gang activity at the school. (Actually 10).
