Fake IDsJust like many college students, Dana and her friends decided to go to a bar on a Saturday night. The problem: Not everyone in their group was old enough to enter. The solution: Use a fake ID obtained through a friend. So Dana and her friends used fake IDs to get into the bar without any problems, or so they thought. Later that night, police raided the bar. Dana's identity card was confiscated and she was subsequently arrested. It seems like everyone wants to be a different age. Many teenagers want to be 18 or 21 to be able to buy cigarettes or alcohol. And I'm sure everyone has heard their parents say they wish they were 18 again. In most cases people cannot change their age, but by using fake identification, someone could pretend to be older than them. More and more people are using fake IDs. There have been many new technological advances in recent years. Thanks to these advancements, such as computers and the Internet, fake IDs are becoming easier to obtain and their quality is improving. Not long after states found ways to make IDs harder to duplicate, counterfeiters are finding a way to create them. Fake IDs are no longer about scraping an 8 into a 3. These advances make it difficult to distinguish fake IDs from real ones. Some websites sell fake IDs for between $50 and $5,000. The sale of fake IDs on the Internet has increased dramatically in recent years. The Internet makes fake IDs readily available, but according to Missoula's "Forged in Plastic" article, most underage customers purchase fake driver's licenses from local manufacturers who use computers, scanners, laser printers, laminators and special programs . According to the San Diego Union Tribune An estimated 10 million fake IDs are confiscated each year. During last year's spring break in Florida, 10,000 fake IDs were confiscated using a portable identity verification device made by the Logix Company of Colorado. There are different types of people who use fake IDs for different reasons. Many people who use fake IDs are just teenagers who want to buy alcohol. 18, 19 and 20-year-olds typically use fake IDs to drink at bars, while high school students with fake IDs simply go to grocery stores to find beer. There are several consequences of owning or selling fake IDs. Underage drinkers who go to bars and are caught with false IDs are usually fined for underage drinking and for having false or altered IDs.
