American parties were typical of the optimistic mood that prevailed in America in the 1920s. People were euphoric after the war. Everything was extravagant and exaggerated. But such euphoria can only lead to a huge collapse. The warning signs were all there for the great fall: the ban on the sale of alcohol which led to illegal practices, unregulated economic activities and a general feeling of invincibility. Gatsby personified the period of American history from the end of World War I and the collapse of the economy that led to the Great Depression. Coming from a poverty-stricken family, he did whatever it took to achieve his wealth. He lived large and flaunted his wealth with a carefree and sometimes distracted attitude. His life was taken suddenly the same way the economy collapsed and led to the Depression.
