I believe criminal justice employees are unmotivated. Having almost 20 years of experience in the juvenile justice system, there have been times when I have seen many workers unmotivated. I was also demotivated at times. I think many people get demotivated for different reasons. The main reason I think is due to the morale between workers and supervisor. This happens when the supervisor does not treat everyone equally. He is harsh with some workers and lenient with others or fails to compliment his workers on a job well done but is quick to reprimand a worker for rule infractions. There are other supervisors who make promises they have no intention of keeping and have difficulty keeping their word. For example, they tell you that you will get a good raise if you work hard, but they don't mention your extra efforts during the review. The worst supervisors are those who encourage their employees to be team players but fail to be team players. Criminal justice employees are also demotivated because, despite all the hard work they do, there is little reward for it. Due to limited resources, salary increases have declined, time and half is now comp time, longevity has stopped, company Christmas parties are gone, and the list goes on. It is difficult enough for workers to feel motivated in these circumstances, but the situation gets worse when they recognize that their pay does not reflect their performance compared to colleagues whose work is similar (Stojkovic, Kalinich & Klofas, 2008). Now employees are told that they are simply lucky enough to have a job. This statement is very true, but it is difficult to find many people who can perform well in this line of work, so employees need to be appreciated more, especially since most incentives have disappeared. It is critical that supervisors focus on what is needed for their employees to do their jobs. They must support their employees and provide continuous feedback on their work performance. The supervisor must include their employees when they make changes that affect the way they do their jobs or find a new way of doing things that were problematic. Supervisors should give their employees a more responsible attitude to make them feel more valued and powerful. There is also a great need for promotion, salary increase and compensation system (educational reimbursement, vacation incentives etc.
