I believe so much attention has been given to Peter the Great because of his extensive reforms. Peter brought both social and economic changes to his country. He wanted to make Russia great. Peter transformed the culture; he wanted his people to wear Western European fashion. Many people were not enthusiastic about the change because they did not like the ways of Western European societies. He strengthened his navy, reformed his army to meet Western standards, and gained control over the church. Peter the Great was described primarily as a powerful and violent man. In some accounts it has been described very differently. Bishop Burnet wrote from his experience with Peter, because he had been in his company. He experienced Peter's violent and non-violent side.
