While the Puritans left their homelands to move away from "indulgence", their attitudes can still be described as ethnocentric, because they did not like and could not tolerate the faith of someone else, they had to make him find a new home and they wanted their own "reform". You could absolutely say that the Puritans felt themselves holier and better than those they were surrounded by in England.
