After the introduction of general senior management, the nurse consultant introduced Sarah now has to deal with a number of different tasks such as more paperwork or cleaning that doesn't fit to his profession. He is also spending his breaks in isolation and needs permission if he wants to order small items such as bandages, because the management believes this is more efficient and economical. On the other hand, unskilled casual workers are allowed to distribute medicines to patients. Following the legislative changes, Sarah also has to care for 15 patients instead of 8 in intensive care, which represents a much greater workload. This role ambiguity, role conflict, isolation, lack of authority and increased workload are the factors that Colligan and Higgins (2006) have pointed out as leading to stress in the workplace. Obviously, a change in Sarah's mental state in response to work stress is already underway as she is less motivated, unhappy and already starting to think about finding another job. As a result, there are also negative consequences such as absenteeism, lower productivity and poor decision-making ability which also impact MV Health.
