Topic > Outside the Wall by Pink Floyd and my experience at NIU

There are many ways to interpret “The Wall” by Pink Floyd. I have never listened to this artist before and these songs are not my type of music. However, listening to the different songs listed, the one that struck me the most was Outside the Wall. As a student at NIU, I truly feel that NIU has robbed me as an individual by making me a brick in the wall, but I would rather be Outside the Wall. There are countless guidelines and requirements that strongly prevent me from breaking the wall and being outside the wall. NIU was not the college I intended to attend, but I did because the educational program was good. I felt that the education system was not what I expected. Going to an Asian school my whole life and then moving to an American school in Illinois was a drastic change. When I first came to NIU, I felt like I didn't fit in until I found the Asian community. The Asian population was quite large and consisted of the Taiwanese Student Association, the Korean Student Association, the Hong Kong Student Association, the Thai Student Association, the Philippine Student Association, the Viet Student Association, and the Chinese student. However, as time passed, all the student associations and the Asian population were disappearing. I don't know if the NIU admissions office has anything to do with accepting Asian students, but it is very sad to see the Asian population dwindle to the point where it may be non-existent. I would like to see the Asian population increase in the years to come so that the Asian community returns to what it was when I first came to NIU. Pink Floyd had many main points in his songs, and a very important one is that he didn't believe in the British education system... middle of paper... just like in the song "The Trial" where the band plays and people sing "tear down the wall" and then we hear the sound of a wall actually being destroyed in the background. Since I have finally registered for classes for next semester and will be ready and finally graduate, I no longer want any surprises from NIU. I pray that everything goes smoothly and that nothing can suppress my individuality and creativity anymore. I would like to finish on a high note and learn useful things that I will need when I graduate, so that I can give the best of myself in my field of work. I have seen numerous people leave NIU because they didn't like what the NIU program did to them. But I know I will overcome what NIU has become and break down the wall. The day I find hope will be the day I graduate, where I will finally be “Outside the Wall”.”.
