“True courage” is when you fight for what is right regardless of whether you win or lose. Atticus Finch defines “true courage” and demonstrates it in several ways throughout the novel. At first glance, it may appear that Atticus Finch's courageous acts are actually acts of cowardice, however as we continue to examine his patient and passive-aggressive attitude, it becomes clearer that what he is actually displaying would be signs of courage. This shows that Atticus's actions of showing courage differently than others are not shown as one would normally expect, and therefore he shows it in a more affective way. Many of the characters in Harper Lee's novel To Kill a Mockingbird display various forms of courage, but Atticus Finch is clearly the bravest because he refuses to give up the fight, no matter what losses or circumstances it may entail. himself or his family, and for his determination to fight for what he believes in and to "make it no matter what" (Lee, 149). In the novel, Atticus tried in every way to help others who needed help. help yourself. First of all, it is courageous of Atticus to take up the Tom Robinson case. Even Atticus's family (like Aunt Alexandra) disapproved of him taking the case. The reason was because of prejudice. Many of his risks were taken during the Tom Robinson case. He risks being criticized by other Maycomb County residents. It takes courage for Atticus Finch to act differently from people's beliefs to do what he considers morally correct. The town's racist views are against Atticus defending Tom Robinson, a black man accused of harming a white woman, and Atticus is often discriminated against for disagreeing......middle of paper.. ....motivation, however, were his children. He wanted to be a good example for his children and instill in them a strong sense of moral values. Scout once asked him why he took a case where he knew he wouldn't win and he responded by saying, "For a number of reasons. The main one is that if I hadn't done it, I couldn't have resisted." Come to think of it in the city, I couldn't represent this county in the legislature, I couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do something anymore." (Lee 100) In other words, he wouldn't have the face to preach to his children about justice and defense of what he believes in when he himself had not defended what he believed in. But above all he does it to support his self-esteem. He wants to know that there is no reason for him to bow his head and stand back when he walks down the street. He wants to live without regrets and for him this is the best way to live life.
