A hiccup is a spasm of the diaphragm. When this happens, the vocal cords, otherwise known as the epiglottis, close and a strange sound, similar to "hiccup" or "hic," comes out of the mouth. Although these sounds can be annoying, they usually only last a while and disappear on their own (Science Museum, 2014). There are different types of hiccups you can have. The first and most common type is hiccups. It lasts from a few seconds to a few days. The next is a persistent hiccup. This type lasts from a few days to a month. The last and least common type is an intractable hiccup. These are very rare and last a year or more (Fun Trivia, 2014). There are many reasons why we get hiccups. First, when we eat too much or eat too quickly, we get hiccups. Next, if there is an irritation, such as an itch, in your throat or stomach you may have hiccups.
