The elderly population is growing rapidly and now makes up more than 13% of the U.S. population (U.S. Census, 2010). With such record growth, there are several aspects of aging still being analyzed. Many may think that reaching old age is a rite of passage, but many approach this time with a different outlook. Through the movie “UP,” we are given the opportunity to see the struggles of an elderly widower named Mr. Fredrickson and the challenges he will face in his later life. The film takes the individual on a journey through his pains and triumphs until he realizes what the true meaning of happiness is. Through the journey, one must consider many factors of aging and decide whether these are true generalizations of aging or are aging myths propagated by the film, specifically, the myths that will be examined in this article are: 1) There is a connection between grief and depression? 2) How vision and hearing impairments affect an older adult's overall quality of life. Finally, 3) Is there a relationship between having a physical mobility deficit and their mental state? Through this examination of the myths propagated in "UP", the reader will be able to better understand what the true generalizations are regarding the myths about the elderly. Of the approximately 35 million people in the United States who are over age 65, 6.5 million need some type of mental health services. (Comer, 2004) However, less than 20% receive treatment (Benek-Higgins, 2008). According to the American Psychiatric Association, there may be instances where a person may not report a depressed mood or sadness, as many, including those in the elderly population, may deny such feelings (APA, 1994). While there may not be a definite relationship between grief and depression, a person is grieving and needs support even when they may not ask for it. If a person is unable to adequately express their feelings about the death, the stages of grief may be at risk for depression. Slowly, over time, many may face vision and/or hearing loss, especially those over the age of 85, and at the same time, are at greater risk of mental health issues. The fact that one can experience a loss of cognitive function and at the same time a sensory loss should cause healthcare providers to more closely monitor the individual's overall health and report on quality of life. When a person has a physical mobility deficit, this also represents a number of various problems and issues that this person faces.
