When we talk about the Vietnamese, most people will think of them as refugees because of their history. The book “The Venetian American 1.5 generation Stories of war, Revolution, Flight, and New Beginnings” by Sucheng Chan described the history of Vietnam; the experiences and sufferings of Vietnamese refugees they went through while on boats leaving Vietnam and their settlements outside Vietnam. The Vietnamese as refugees who had gone through many hardships while fleeing to other countries. Vietnam had to fight for its independence from Japan and France. It made them suffer more when they had to fight against their own people during the Civil War. Seeking to declare his own independence, Ho Chi Minh started the revolution in the North to fight the invaders and fought with the people of the South supported by the United States to finally conquer the South and make Vietnam a communist state; this civil war caused suffering to many Vietnamese because they had to fight with their own people in war and became refugees to leave Vietnam to seek freedom after the fall of Saigon. The book is divided into two sections. The first section is about the history of Vietnam and the experiences of Vietnamese refugees and the different reasons why they travel to America or other countries. Early in history, Vietnam was influenced by China that the emperor was in control of the government of the dynasties. The French went to Vietnam in 1614 to try to colonize and educate the Vietnamese to promote Catholicism. The French forced Vietnam to sign the Treaty of Saigon in 1862 to cede Saigon to the French. Under French control and repression, the Vietnamese wanted to start the anti-French movement and declare their independence. To understand...... half of the paper......ch discrimination in school because China's power is increasing. Unlike Vietnam in the 1970s, it has been 30 years since I arrived here because nowadays many things are different. As refugees in America, the Vietnamese encountered many difficulties in adopting American culture. They come from Asia where there is a completely different culture than that of the United States. They had to change their lifestyle and believe. To adapt to American culture, they have to start all over again and abound with everything they had in Vietnam. They were still discriminated against even as they tried to fully assimilate. They wouldn't have had to experience this if there hadn't been the wars in Vietnam. The war gave them only suffering and nothing else. Especially when there is a civil war where people have to fight with their own people. Therefore, peace is important to people.
