Global entertainment has evolved technologically, and the most recent advancement has been video games. Tremendous changes have occurred since video games entered our global culture. They have become the new “big thing” in modern entertainment. Unfortunately, the rise of video games is accompanied by major debates over whether or not games are actually useful. The world's media has blamed video games as the main source of aggression, but in reality, video games can help people around the world socially, physically and intellectually. A huge controversy involved the incident at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. In December 2012, Adam Lanza, who was a video gamer, killed twenty children and six teachers after shooting his mother. He killed himself shortly after the shooting ended. Authorities quickly used video games as a scapegoat to explain the mass murder. A police officer told the New York Daily News: “[This] was a score sheet. This was the job of a gamer, and it was his intention to put his name at the top of that list." (Lupica) While politics blames tragedies on video games, video games help remove aggression from the real world and leave it liberate through an imaginary experience. Dr. Kipling D. Williams PhD, teacher of social psychological sciences at Purdue University, said that "children's violent tendencies can be diverted into violent video games rather than doing so in real life."
