1. Thomas Jefferson admired, respected, and praised the Indians for their intellect (Hollitz, 124). Yet he also saw them in political terms as enemies in war or partners in peace. Jefferson's extensive public career enabled him to establish relations between the United States and various Indian nations in the 18th century. Jefferson notes that the Indians had not yet been introduced or developed their own written language (Hollitz, 124). As a man of the Enlightenment, he knew that the Indian way of life could no longer exist in the expanding United States. Jefferson's attitude toward the Indian population of the United States always seemed as ironic as his attitude toward slavery. On several occasions Jefferson went to great lengths to describe the Indian people as a noble race, innocent victims of history. On one occasion, he senses the tragedy of the Indian's fate as a human being. On the other hand, it was during Jefferson's presidency that decisions were made that caused massive sections of the Indian population to move west of the Mississippi (Hollitz, 126). Thomas Jefferson had a tremendous impact on the Indian nations of North America. He practiced an Indian policy that had two main purposes. First, Jefferson wanted to ensure the security of the United States and sought to unite the Indian nations with the United States through treaties (Hollitz, 127). The purpose of these treaties was to obtain land and promote trade, but above all to keep the Indians allied with the United States and not with the European powers (Hollitz, 127). Second, Jefferson used treaty systems to advance his program of gradual “civilization.” Through treaties and trade agreements, Jefferson I...... middle of paper ...... of separate female sphere stated that today prevails the fact that women belong only to the home, where they do housework, cook for family and take care of children. In today's modern times, there is a high percentage of stay-at-home husbands who have voluntarily changed positions with their wives to take care of the house, while the woman has become the breadwinner of the family. Our Generation Y is becoming more and more diverse in terms of ancient traditions where women stayed at home while men went to work. Women have more freedom in this period than in any other period in American history. Some people embrace different ideals because they have been taught to live their lives in a certain way that it is difficult for them to change their ideology to a different lifestyle. While some people embrace the freedom of change, there are limitless possibilities in the ways people choose to live their lives.
