Topic > Persuasive Essay on Detention - 995

There are currently 5,867 people in detention centers and another 3,391 people in community detention. These men, women and children have all fled their country to escape the terror and have sought asylum in a better place where they can start a new life. Unfortunately the vast majority of these people will not be allowed to enter Australia on “free” terms. They are held in places called detention centers, a very brutal place to be, detention centers are commonly known to cause physical and mental health problems that can last forever. It is sad to know that these people are subjected to harsh conditions. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights under Article 9 states that “No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile.” And Article 14 states that “every individual has the right to seek and enjoy asylum from persecution in other countries”. Australia, along with 144 other countries, has ratified the Human Rights Declaration, yet Australia continues to operate and establish detention centers. The detention centers must end, no crime has been committed by refugees, the only crime committed is putting refugees under obligation of detection because it violates their human rights. Funding detention centers is also a big problem as they require large amounts of money, Martin Bowles the secretary of the immigration department has stated that the cost of running the detention network as a whole amounts to €1.5 billion dollars. a measure of last resort” even after the passage of this law there are still a significant number of children who are still...... middle of paper......lmultiple cases where Australia has made this, and how If Australia continues to do this and get away with it, it violates multiple laws and continues to get away with it. They are even violating their own law that they created, which is the Migration (Supplementary Protection) Amendment Act. The detention centers are purposely placed on Christmas Island as it completely denies refugees access to Australian courts. That said, I believe I have provided enough evidence to support my claim that detention centers are worse than prison, people are brutally injured and suffer from mental problems. Detention centers need to be closed, they are illegal because they violate multiple laws and the government knows it and they continue to get away with it, I think you will all agree with me that detention centers destroy and kill people
