Topic > Martin Luther King's Letter from Birmingham Jail

In his letter Luther King states: “If his repressed emotions are not released in nonviolent ways, they will seek expression through violence; this is not a threat but a historical fact." With this quote MLK wants to demonstrate two things. The first is the exceptional way in which blacks have acted with non-violent protest, the second is to make whites understand the consequences that can occur if a change is not made. Furthermore, Luther King states in his letter: “Oppressed people cannot remain oppressed forever. The desire for freedom will come sooner or later." It means that this segregation will end, he doesn't know when, but he knows it will end. And he is trying to tell the white population to stop it immediately, to avoid violent protests. “There comes a time when the cup of endurance overflows and men are no longer willing to allow themselves to be plunged into the abyss of injustice where they experience the desolation of corrosive despair.” With this other example Martin Luther King wants to explain that blacks are also human beings and that the time will come when patience will end and their way of acting will be changed.
