In Franz Kafka's story, “The Metamorphosis”, the character Gregor Samsa wakes up one morning and discovers that he has transformed into an insect. Gregor's metamorphosis into an insect reveals a lot about his relationship with his family. Regarding his relationship with his father, Gregor's true feeling for his father is revealed to be that he feels he has an obligation to support him financially. Gregor's father, however, is revealed that his true feelings towards Gregor are that he despises him and does not care for him. Say no to plagiarism. After realizing that he has transformed into an insect, Gregor no longer cares about his physical state. The only thing he cared about was his job, fearing that his "boss would definitely show up to the doctor of the medical insurance company, accuse his parents of having a lazy child, and accept the doctor's recommendation not to advance no claim as a doctor". he believed that no one was ever sick but that many worked” (Metamorphoses). Gregor takes a job he despises to pay off his father's debt and take his father's place as the family's breadwinner after his father's business fails. He says that “if I hadn't had my parents to think about I would have quit a long time ago” (Metamorphosis), proving that the only reason he works at that job is for his parents. Even as an insect Gregor was altruistic and "he was still there and had not the slightest intention of abandoning his family" (Metamorphoses). He does everything he can for the sake of his father and his family, without worrying about the pain he is causing himself. When Gregor tried to open the door after his transformation, he thought of his family and “bit down on the key with all his strength, paying no attention to the pain it caused” (Metamorphoses). Gregor, both as a human and an insect, cares more about his father than himself. Gregor's father's true feelings for Gregor are completely different from Gregor's altruistic feelings for him. His father despises him and uses him to his advantage. After his father's business failed, Gregor worked hard to provide for the family as his father could no longer. At first his father and his family were “amazed and happy” but then “he got used to it” (Metamorphoses). In providing for his family, Gregor distanced himself from his relationship with his father, saying that he "only now remained close to his sister" (Metamorphoses). This suggests that if Gregor takes on the role of breadwinner of the family, his father may feel ashamed of his son having to pay off his debt and of the role reversal as the father is supposed to support the family. After Gregor's transformation into an insect, his father's true resentment towards him manifests itself. Because he no longer provides for the family and has instead become a burden, his father displays disgust and hostility towards him. When he sees him for the first time in the form of an insect, he is hostile to him and "grabbed the prosecutor's stick, took a large newspaper from the table and used it to chase Gregor back to his room" (Metamorphoses). When Gregor becomes trapped between the door, "his father gave him a strong push from behind which freed him from where he was held and sent him flying, and bleeding heavily, deep into his room" (Metamorphoses). He also shows extreme hostility towards Gregor when Gregor “decided to bombard him” with apples and his sister had to “[beg] him to spare Gregor's life” (Metamorphoses). His hostility towards Gregor and his contempt for having him.
