I have never liked any type of writing, be it narrative, expository, descriptive or persuasive. As a student who easily manipulates numbers, I was eager to finish this Foundation 1013 English course. During the course, students were given the task of constructing a critical response essay to the sources, formulating groups to develop a documented essay, a collaborative presentation and reviewing and submitting the initial documented essay. The first required essay, critical response to sources, was challenging as it required each student to carefully read three articles to discover similarities and contrasts in the common idea being put forward. Exercises such as group presentations, peer review workshops, collaborative research assignments, all supported the learning process, providing students with key information to engage more in their writing and improve their writing skills. Through these engagements, it allowed me to gain additional opinions and knowledge, improving my proficiency in formulating the final required task, the documented essay. This assignment was the longest article (1200 words) discussing the impact of the US intervention in Jamaica and the country's response. In the initial draft I had a good understanding of the topic, however poor construction and analysis of the document led to a less than desired outcome. After gathering the first draft of the documented essay and peer reviews, it was evident that improvements were needed, including correct use of sources, adjusting the narrow topic as it lacked context, and appropriate use of citations in the text because the paragraphs did not convincingly describe the main points. After a long reflection on how to maximize the remaining votes, it was decided that the topic needed to be changed: the impact of the intervention of the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in the political affairs of Latin American countries between 1952 and 1980, the case of Guatemala. In doing so, this allowed us to focus on the remedial measures provided by the instructor in tailoring an essay within the parameters required for grading. Please note: this is just an example.
