Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by JK Rowling is about an eleven-year-old boy named Harry Potter. Harry soon discovers, on his eleventh birthday, that he is the orphaned son of two powerful wizards and that he possesses unique magical powers. These letters were kept out of Harry's sight, as the Dursleys knew it was something bad. These letters quickly begin to annoy the Dursleys and at midnight they hear a loud knock on the door which appears to be a giant named Hagrid. That night, Hagrid gives Harry an acceptance letter to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry just as Harry turns eleven. Harry discovers that the Dursleys have been trying to deny Harry's magic all these years and quickly accepts the choice to be admitted to the school. The following day, Hagrid takes Harry to London to buy school supplies in Hogsmeade. To purchase supplies, they first go to the wizard bank, Gringotts, where Harry collects the money his parents left him. They shop in the wizarding shopping street known as Diagon Alley, where Harry dons his school uniform and first meets one of his classmates/enemies, Draco Malfoy. He also buys his books, potion ingredients, and, finally, a magic wand, which he discovers is the "companion" of an evil wizard that people call "you know who." A month passes and Harry goes to the train station and takes the train to Hogwarts on platform 9 3/4. On the train, Harry quickly becomes acquainted with fellow first years, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. When they arrive at Hogwarts, first years take turns wearing the Sorting Hat to find out which house they will be placed in. When Harry's time finally comes, he fears being assigned to the sinister house of Slytherin, but he, Ron and Hermione all end up in Gryffindor together. Once the school year begins, Harry discovers that Professor Snape, his Potions teacher, obviously doesn't. he doesn't like it. When the school year begins, they begin taking lessons on how to fly on brooms and how to play quidditch. During this lesson, Harry begins to cultivate an absolute hatred towards Draco Malfoy once Malfoy decides to misbehave with Harry out of pure jealousy because Harry is a natural at the sport. Later that day, Malfoy challenges Harry to a wizard's duel at midnight. After Malfoy doesn't show up but Harry does, Harry almost gets caught. While trying to hide so as not to be discovered, he accidentally discovers a ferocious three-headed dog inside the school guarding a door. On Halloween night, a troll is found lurking inside the building. The students are all forced to be escorted back to their dormitories, but Harry and Ron sneak off to find Hermione, knowing that she is alone and unaware of the troll. Together, they defeat the troll in the girl's bathroom with Hermione also terrified. Goody-two-shoes Hermione tells a lie to protect Harry and Ron from punishment and this was the start of a beautiful friendship based on trust. For Christmas, Harry.
