“Carpe Diem” translated to “seize the day” or “seize the day” has many definitions but in the following paragraphs there will be two definitions which will show my understanding of "Carpe Diem." One definition is courting men or women and the other is recognizing the power of every day. An example of “Carpe Diem” used primarily is to woo men or women. For example in the song “Who Do We Think We Are”, the lines “We can't stay without magic. It's the only way we know, let's take a great trip into the night, let's turn it on 'til we both explode,” shows taking advantage of the moment while being available with a significant other. Another song that shows an example of courtship of men or women is in the song "It's Now or Never". In the lines "It's now or never, come hold me tight, kiss me my darling, be mine tonight", shows that there is no time and now is the best time available with your sweet half. A poem that shows an example of courting men or women is in the poem “To his shy mistress In the second stanza he explains how life is short and death is an eternity and that if they wait too long to court”. the worms will take her virginity, and when he says this he is suggesting to woo before it is too late Another example that shows an example of wooing men or women is in the same poem “To his timid mistress in the third stanza he says “. now” stating that they should court now while they are young. For example in the song "Young, Wild & Free", in the lines "We're just having fun, we don't care who sees, so what we come out with is what living young, wild and free should be like." This shows that even if you are young you should be able to appreciate life and have fun at that time. Another example to recognize the power of every day is from the song “If Today Was Your Last Day.” In the lines "If today was your last day and tomorrow was too late could you say goodbye to yesterday?" shows that time controls those moments and you never know when it ends and take advantage of the moment. In the poem “To virgins, to buy plenty of time,” the line “Gather rosebuds while you can” says that time is running out and you should cherish that moment. Another example from the same poem about recognizing the power of each day is from stanza two. In this stanza the sun is related as time and when the sun becomes higher the time is running out and those precious moments should be utilized. In conclusion there are similarities between “Carpe Diem” poems and modern music. For example both can be used to express how you feel. Furthermore, both poetry and modern music gradually tell the subject what he wants or what he should do.
