Topic > Remembering my first day of middle school

Grade 8 year. It symbolizes the beginning of the end, but also the beginning of a new beginning. I woke up reaching over to turn off the alarm. It was my first day of eighth grade, but it was also my last year before high school. I looked out the window, watching the big bright sun rise into the dull morning sky, admiring the colors created by the rising sun. I snapped out of my thoughts as my mother called my brother letting him know that he would be late if he stayed in that bed any longer. When the clock read 7:50. I stood up, climbing out of bed, placing one foot after the other, stopping in front of the dresser to put on my dress which was neatly placed on top just as I had left it the night before. Happy with how I look, I walk down the stairs, grab my bag, and throw both straps over my shoulders before walking out the front door. Say no to plagiarism. It was pleasantly warm and everything on the ground was bathed in sunlight, so much so that it seemed as if there were sparkling diamonds in the tops of the trees and grass. Slowly approaching the school, I nervously fiddled with my fingers as my mother spoke kind, encouraging words before I jumped out of the car as she waved me goodbye before driving off. I took a deep breath before walking back to the back of the school like we did every year. As I wandered, my eyes scanned the schoolyard as I searched for someone I recognized but it seemed impossible. All I could see were the bright colors of elementary school backpacks. I walked some more until I noticed where all the eighth graders would line up. There were countless people, most of them running around running past me only missing me by a few inches. I felt so out of place. I felt so alone, I felt like I was put in the middle of nowhere and all I wanted to do was go home. After a few more steps I had reached the line where the eighth graders would meet. I heard my name called a couple of times but I couldn't tell if anyone was calling it from the whole conversation and giggling around me. I heard a familiar voice call my name and this time more clearly. I turned around as a smile crept onto my face as I happily saw my best friend. My beating heart returned to its normal rhythm when I saw a group of more familiar faces. Knowing that I wasn't the only one nervous about the expression on everyone's faces made me feel so much better.
