IndexIntroductionIntroverts vs. extrovertsConclusionIntroductionPersonalities vary. According to psychologists and many other social experts, there are two main social behaviors that a person acquires as they mature into adulthood: introversion and extroversion. An introvert is someone who prefers a calm, minimally stimulating environment and may tend to feel drained after socializing but regain their energy by spending time alone. An extrovert is an outgoing, outspoken person who feels full of energy when socializing with others. In the book "Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking," author Susan Cain argues that society underestimates introverts and shows what a disadvantage it is to do so. “These students live in a world where status, income, and self-esteem depend more than ever on the ability to meet the demands of personality culture” (Cain 31). It maps the rise of extroverts over the course of the 20th century and investigates how deeply it has infiltrated our culture. However, introverts possess a Silent Strength and are easily overlooked and underestimated. “But what if you admire the hyperthymic among us, but also like your calm and thoughtful self” (Cain 39). A closer examination of introverts' success in the workplace contradicts previous societal notions and reveals that there are specific physical, mental, and emotional strategies that leaders and employers can use to ensure the best results in the IT field. For this essay on introverts and extroverts, it is important to understand different social behaviors and how they impact individuals in various aspects of their lives, as highlighted by Susan Cain in her book "Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can 'Don't Stop Talking'. To implement these things, I chose to pursue a career in information technology. According to the University of Maryland Department of Computer Science, computer science is the study of computers and computational systems. Unlike electrical and computer engineers, computer scientists primarily deal with software and software systems; this includes their theory, design, development and application. Major areas of study within computer science include artificial intelligence, computer systems and networks, security, database systems, human-computer interaction, vision and graphics, numerical analysis, programming languages, software engineering, bioinformatics, and theory of information technology. While knowing how to program is essential to studying computer science, it is only one element of the field. Computer scientists design and analyze algorithms to solve programs and study the performance of computer hardware and software. The problems that computer scientists encounter range from abstract ones, i.e. determining which problems can be solved with computers and the complexity of the algorithms that solve them, to tangible ones, designing applications that work well on portable devices, that are easy to use and that maintain safety measures. Being an introvert, I think this will be perfect for me. The computer science field is an independent path and is very suited to my personality. College is challenging at times for all students, but for introverts it can be extremely difficult. While more extroverted students can easily make friends and get aheadthrough social events, introverts can often feel uncomfortable and excluded. But it doesn't have to be that way. There are several ways to help introverts feel comfortable and enjoy the college experience. In some cases, introverts may have difficulty saying no to other people, but it is important for them to express what their limits are. You should set clear boundaries with your friends when you need time alone to recharge. This may be difficult to do, but otherwise you will most likely end up feeling tired and drained. Online classes can help introverts stay stable. The availability of online classes makes it easier for students to complete their studies while staying in their comfort zone. Even those who don't enroll in an online program can take some classes online, which can help introverts rest from dealing with the in-person classroom experience. Introverts shouldn't worry about missing out. You may feel pressure to go out with friends, but you should respect your need for alone time. The fear of missing out can be especially difficult for introverts because they need to miss out to function well and often do their best work when alone. Time management is an extremely important factor in college success. Since introverts regularly need to recharge their batteries, it's a good idea for them to always plan for downtime in advance. Given the social and experiential nature of the university environment, effective time management and proactive planning will help introverts balance the need to focus attention inward and regain energy when needed. An introverted student needs to dedicate time to self-care and reflection, so that he or she can take care of individual needs and be energized for future activities. Introverts need to look for some activities that attract extroverts. Introverts need quiet time, but they also need to be around extroverts to have a healthy social life. This may seem illogical, but making sure you deal with people with extroverted energy in short periods will be helpful. According to Cain, “The book of Exodus lacks explanation, but its stories suggest that introversion plays yin with extroversion's yang; that the medium is not always the message; and that people followed Moses because his words were thoughtful, not because he pronounced them well” (Cain 61). If you only surround yourself with people like you, you may limit your social network. Make an effort to find those activities that you can at least tolerate during certain periods of time. If you are a strong introvert, you will add unique value to that group. Just as it is helpful for introverts to make friends with extroverted people, they should also make sure to connect with introverted peers. Since many extroverts do not understand the temperament of introverts, it is important for them to seek out people who appreciate their quiet nature. Meeting new people can be difficult for introverts, but they can start by building connections even with people they're already somewhat familiar with. Whether it's someone who sits next to them in class or a friend of their roommate, forming friendships with people they already feel comfortable with can help them build their social circle. Introverts may think there is something wrong with them because many people around them are more extroverted. However, introversion can be an asset. Introverts need to embrace their personality. Being introverted can be a real strength, especially when it comes to wanting.
