Self-efficacy is defined as a person's ability to perceive themselves as successful in specific challenges, it also influences the person's choices and determination in life. This impacts the choices I make in tertiary education, I don't put myself in a position to feel uncomfortable because I have low self-efficacy. This has a negative effect on my grade as I am overwhelmed with school workloads and tasks such as public speaking. Bandura (1993) states that "seeing oneself acquire progressive mastery strengthened personal efficacy", this shows that to acquire self-efficacy it is necessary to feel capable of being successful. By practicing public speaking, I would be more confident that I will achieve better results in future speeches. This can also be applied to my school workload, by slowly increasing my workload I will not feel overwhelmed and anxious, because high self-efficacy towards an individual gives him the confidence to perform well. The second challenge I have faced since starting my studies at Griffith College is managing my time between lectures and tutorials, home study, work and personal leisure. Zimmerman (2002) states that "self-regulation is not a mental skill or an academic performance skill; rather it is the self-directed process through which students transform their mental abilities." I have to work to pay the bills that take up much of my available study time, but to be successful I have to be rigorously organized. Luckily, the student advisors at Griffith Collage have provided me with a weekly planner template so I can organize my study and free time efficiently. Self-regulation is important not only for education, but it teaches skills that you can use throughout your life. I can also use self-regulation skills to agree with my manager to work shifts on days when I don't have class.
