Topic > What does friendship mean to you: a reflection on 'The Reel Sisters'

What does friendship mean to you? In this essay, I would like to share how The Reel Sisters by Michelle Cummings helped me understand the depth of true friendship, even though I initially thought it was just a fly fishing guide. For me it is a refuge away from the scrutinizing gaze of the real world, a place where I can lay bare my fears without worrying about what would become of me once I get out, a safe pillar that is always there to support me. It has always been difficult for me to find an in-depth friendship story. We say no to plagiarism. Get a tailor-made essay on "Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned"? Get an Original Essay Fly fishing has traditionally been considered a male sport for centuries, I have never once thought about a woman fly fishing, believe me, or not, for me fishing has always been something reserved only for men ; however, I was impressed with the author's contribution. After completing this novel, I can say that my ideals have changed. It initially spans the lives of four women; Rose, Sophia, Amanda and Veronica, The Reel Sisters tells the story of friendship, struggles and personal experiences of these distinguished women who share a common interest in fly fishing. This close-knit group of four sisters immediately turns five when they accidentally find a naked girl on the shore. The novel is written from the first person point of view of each of the five characters, the good part is that the writer makes you understand what the character's perspective is by placing that character's name as the chapter title, giving the reader an idea better understanding of their emotions and thoughts. There was so much to love about this novel; the bond between the four sisters and the accident before they found their fifth sister, Melody, the light-hearted conversations between the sisters, the emotional growth of the characters and, of course, their trustworthiness with each other despite their different ages ranging from mid-twenties years until after retirement. I also loved the twist that comes at the end of the story. The story is long-paced, which is understandable considering the sport of fishing requires a lot of time, patience, and effort. Nonetheless, it's not a boring read. I loved the fun way the author taught fly fishing, it was just like you would teach a child, which is why I found myself interested in the sport halfway through the book. Until now I still remember the number one rule “always go pee before putting on your boots”. If I ever venture into this sport, I hope to find a teacher who resembles the author.
