It's shocking to know that there are around ten people dying from smoking every single minute, and no one seems to have any idea. Indeed, there is “a growing gap between the real world and academia” as people are more intellectual about things that are irrelevant to real life and ignore things that are indispensable to living in the real world (Orr 310 ). Did you know that every year in the United States alone there are over four hundred thousand deaths caused by cigarettes and tobacco? This means that, according to “Smoking Statistics”, around five million people die every year in the world. Smoking is known to cause preventable disease and death, yet not many institutions have developed an adequate system to prevent cigarettes and tobacco from killing millions of people every year. For example, all universities promote health and wellness, and many claim to be substance-free, but do not restrict the sale of cigarettes and tobacco in campus stores or smoking on campus. People die, thousands take drugs and an entire population is affected, so it is urgent that a university aims to educate students to fight smoking. The ideal student will learn the immediate and long-term effects of what cigarettes can do to themselves and others around them, to resist peer pressure and be able to recognize and resist advertising and media ploys. To achieve this goal, the university must provide a curriculum that includes classes such as Anatomy, Biology of Smoking with Seminars, Media Effects, History of Smoking, Tobacco Industry 101, and DARE with Community Service. Many people are unaware of the many ways in which cigarette or tobacco use can harm them and others around them because they never...... middle of paper ...... its students to spread their knowledge. Courses offered by a university should ideally enable students to learn about the immediate and long-term effects of tobacco use and to recognize and resist both peer pressure and media ploys. More importantly, they must also enable students to share their knowledge with society and help others, so that the entire population can effectively fight smoking together and prevent people from wasting their lives.
